One of my clients that I personally coached used to call my service “Coaching Me” because to him that is what it was. I truly believe that my greatest growth has been to have someone or a few lucky trusted people that are truly concerned in helping you get better. I started with one person and it has now grown to several. Probably, because I need so much help and have an incredible desire to keep growing and improving. I have a couple of coaches in basketball, two leadership coaches, three business coaches, two speaking coaches, one coach for book writing, and a coach for social media. As you can see, I’m a mess and need a lot of help. The way I look at it is, Harvard, Duke, Stanford, any great university, has a lot of professors…I’m the student that wants to learn.
My belief is that “Coaching is about taking people where they can’t take themselves.” The philosophy that Coach George Raveling shared with me about what the most important thing he learned from working at Nike was “There is no finish line!” Nike is never satisfied or complacent. They know that they have to bring their best everyday. My advice to you is find a person(s) that you admire, trust, respect, etc. and ask if they would consider helping you. All of my coaching relationships are what I call “2-way.” They coach me and I coach them. This provides for an incredible experience, and many times will result in caring and true friendships as well. You must want to be coached! Before I start coaching someone I always ask them two things.

1. Are you Coachable?
2. May I be truthful with you?

One of the most generous, knowledgeable, and sharing coaches I know is Stan Van Gundy. When you’re with Stan, he genuinely wants to learn from you. He is a great listener, and a great teacher. Kevin and I are so excited to announce that he will be with us at Coaching U Live in Indianapolis on July 9th, 2013.
